          Abstract

Data collection for a multimeasure, longitudinal study of the impact of childhood cancer on families was begun in 1978 and continued until 1984. Parents—and children and siblings, where appropriate—were interviewed. Additional data were obtained by the use of questionnaires and projective techniques. This article describes findings from the analysis of parental interview data from 10 families. Families with a surviving child and families whose child died were included in the sample. Our results suggest that, following the diagnosis of childhood cancer, chronic uncertainty impairs parental ability to adequately appraise the health status of the diagnosed child and the younger siblings of the deceased child.
