UNIVERSITIES ARE NOW offering massive open online courses (MOOCs), which have been
called a “disruptive innovation” in higher education (

). MOOCs have been offered in business, education, engineering, genetics, health informatics,
math, medicine, pharmacology, public health, and physiology (
Bellack, 2013
,

). To date research measuring the outcomes of MOOCs is scarce; however, early evidence
demonstrates the benefits that MOOCs have for introducing students to the online learning
environment (
