Pediatric obesity has become a major health care concern over the last several decades. This condition can lead to detrimental life-long physical and mental comorbidities. Pediatric primary care providers have a unique opportunity to both prevent and treat pediatric obesity in their clinics. However, discussing this topic with families can be uncomfortable and time consuming. Time efficient resources to educate and increase confidence are needed to improve the management of pediatric obesity. This quality improvement project integrated the Healthy Care for Healthy Kids by the National Institute for Children's Healthcare Quality (2014) into the electronic medical record at a pediatric primary care office in rural East Tennessee.

Caregivers encounter difficulties differentiating fear and pain experienced by children and tend to interpret what children may feel, often resulting in inadequate pain management. While many pain self-assessment scales are available, there is no validated self-assessment fear scale for children.

In the framework of new legislation on School Health Services (SHS) in Flanders (Belgium), nurses lead a preventive consultation with every three-year-old child and its parent(s), with the aim of assessing risks in child development and potential parenting problems. This study assesses the feasibility of the “Structured Problem Analysis of Raising kids aged 36 months” (SPARK36), a broad-scope structured interview to facilitate such consultations.

Communication quality is an essential indicator of family functioning and represents an important outcome after pediatric nursing interventions. However, few well-documented child-report questionnaires for family communication exist. We aimed to document the psychometric properties of a previously developed child-rated family communication scale for use in pediatric nursing.

Pediatric early warning scores (EWS) have been utilized to assist the identification of children at risk for clinically decompensating, experiencing a cardiac or respiratory arrest, or requiring a transfer to a higher level of care. Although their use is widespread, little consistency exists between tools and research evaluating the effectiveness of these tools is lacking. This quasi-experimental project evaluated twenty-five medical-surgical staff nurses' use and perceptions as well as the inter-rater reliability of a newly modified pediatric EWS tool at a free standing, academic Midwestern pediatric hospital.

Pediatric healthcare professionals (HCPs) may experience events that lead to psychological distress or second victim experiences (SVEs). This project evaluates the impact of a newly implemented peer support program on SVEs and perceptions of supportive resources among pediatric HCPs.

Gluten-free diet (GFD) is a lonely lifelong management for patients with celiac disease (CD), which may affect their quality of life (QoL). This can be evaluated by generic or specific instruments. We aimed to translate, validate and cross-culturally adapt a specific-CD instrument to Moroccan-Arabic version (M-CD-DUX), and then apply it to evaluate the QoL of Moroccan celiac children.

Empowerment is a widely accepted approach to health promotion in which primary care nurses play an important role. Despite its clinical importance, empirical knowledge is low, mainly due to the lack of instruments to measure this construct. The Empowering Speech Practices Scale (ESPS) is a Finnish measure used to assess the empowerment process in counselling sessions. We designed this study to assess the psychometric properties of a Portuguese adaptation of the ESPS for families of 5-year-old children and nurses in well-child visits.

Child maltreatment is a devastating epidemic affecting millions of children and adolescents in the United States (U.S.) every year. Primary care providers (PCPs) encounter these victims but need resources to aid in the recognition of maltreatment. The purpose of this review is to evaluate child maltreatment measurement instruments and determine feasibility of use by U.S. PCPs.

Family-Centered care (FCC) is a model used in pediatric healthcare delivery wherein planning care for children incorporates the family, but questions remain whether there has been effective FCC implementation in practice. The purpose of this study was to examine the importance of FCC to pediatric nurses and their view of their organizations' support of FCC implementation.

A successful transition from gavage to full oral feeding is a decisive indicator for discharging premature infants from the neonatal intensive care unit. A clinically useful measure of oral feeding readiness would help nurses initiate implementation of the cue-based feeding model in Taiwan. The study aimed to assess the validity and reliability of the Traditional Chinese Preterm Oral Feeding Readiness Assessment Scale (TC-POFRAS).

The Visual Analogue Scale applied by an observer (VASobs) is widely used to quantify pain but the evidence to support validity is poor. The aim of this study was to evaluate the psychometric and practical properties of the VASobs used to assess procedural pain in infants and young children.

Parents play a key role in acceptance of the diagnosis of epilepsy by the child and compliance of the child with its treatment. Therefore, the perceptions and experiences of parents about this process are critical. The Epilepsy-Related Fears in Parents Questionnaire is one such instrument, and it has been used to measure the epilepsy-related fear experienced by parents who had children with epilepsy in Germany.

To date, these tools are not sufficiently comprehensive to inform nurse staffing assignments and have limited practical application. The Complexity Assessment and Monitoring to Ensure Optimal Outcomes (CAMEO©) acuity tool was initially developed and validated to quantify patient acuity in terms of complexity of nursing cognitive workload in pediatric intensive care units (ICU).

An evidence-based pediatric readmission tool could not be identified to replicate in the pediatric space, therefore the High Acuity Readmission Risk Pediatric Screen (HARRPS) Tool was developed to fill this gap. The research aim was to develop a risk score algorithm that accurately predicts pediatric readmissions and provide a predictive validation of the HARRPS Tool.
